Poll: What should VMWare focus on in 2009
I attended the VMUG 2008 last week and had a great time! I finally met up with a bunch of bloggers I wanted to shake hands with for a long time..!
During the keynote Richard Garsthagen again displayed his presentation skills and showed the VMUG-attendees a glimpse of what VMWare is up to in the near future. While I was following Richard’s session I asked myself:”Cool that VMWare is doing al this but what about the people that use ESX every day..what would they like to see VMWare put some EXTRA effort in..?” the poll closes @ 17-1-2009
I’ll explain some of the choices.
Marketing
Simply put, Microsoft’s current Hyper-v (or hyper-ventilation as I like to call it) is a hang glider, VMWare’s ESX is a space shuttle..it’s that simple but the marketing machine MS has, is using cloak&dagger tactics to hide this. VMWare should counter attack and point out how superior ESX is in comparison to Hyper-v.
Minimizing issues with updates
Even though ESX has a good track record, this last year some nasty bugs have scared ESX-Admins out of their undies (example One and Two) Fair is fair, when you are flying a space shuttle, things get complex, but if VMWare releases a patch for the hull, I don’t want to see my fuel tanks fall off. ESX is an enterprise product and the foundation of an environment so encountering such grave issues after installing a rolluppack should be as close to zero as possible.
New Features for ESX
Simply because you can never have enough! Even if the competition is using a hang glider and their space shuttle will not be ready till 2012-2014!
Enhancing Virtual Center
Microsoft firmly believes that the war will be won in the management space instead of who has the best hypervisor. So VMWare should step up their efforts to elevate VC to the next level and give Microsoft fierce competition from the start in this upcoming war.
Surely, I’ve left out some important things but VMWare can only do so much in a year so choose wisely…!
