Powerfuse 2008 migration day 1

Yesterday I spoke to RES Support (thanks again Rob!) about the best way to migrate our environment. It seems that the timetable has shifted a little. The migration will start today!

I was under the impression (don’t know why) that we could migrate the old v7.x database cleanly to a new v8 database. It turns out that’s not the way it works.
Powerfuse will upgrade the current database from v7 to v8 by placing new tables/index etc in the same database. This means that the old stuff will also still be in there. The big advantage is that the upgrade can be done during production hours!
If you want a clean database without the 7x stuff present you can:
- Upgrade the 7x database to 2008
- Upgrade all the clients to 2008
- Down the road, install a clean Powerfuse 2008 and choose a new database
- Export the upgraded 2008 environment using building-blocks
- Import the building-blocks into the newly installed 2008 environment
- Point the clients (terminal servers) to the new environment
- Done!

That’s what the future will look like, first things first!
I’ll post today’s progress in this post:

09:00 – Document the Powerfuse environment by creating a complete instant report.
09:30 – Send the RES Support an email telling them that we are migrating our database today so that they are aware of our situation. (Rob was nice enough to give me a support ticket number when I called yesterday)
09:35 Cleanup as much old junk from Powerfuse as possible (unused configuration, apps etc etc)
11:38 Cleaning up is a dirty process..!
12:12 Reading through Powerfuse Upgrade guide one last time
14:15 Checking with our DBA to make sure that Powerfuse user has proper user rights to perform the DB upgrade
15:08 User rights should be ok! The storage space for the DB has been increased just in case.
15:15 Colleague is finishing up the purging of unused stuff in Powerfuse
15:45 DBA will export and backup the current Powerfuse v7 DB
16:00  Shutting down primary TS to create snapshot
Starting primary TS
Starting powerpack to begin upgrade…keep fingers crossed!
16:17 error: cannot migrate from REM only installation
Shi*t, Only the Real Enterprise Manager was installed on that server by external partner a couple of years ago. I’ll use another server.
16:40 Started powerpack on other server
16:42 Setup says: Migrating DB….
17:00 Error during the migration of the DB, v7 is still operational though. Having users logged in with an Oracle DB as backend appears to be a no-no. (I should have known)
18:15 Contacted RES Support. Going to try a different approach tomorrow so stay tuned for Powerfuse Migration day 2…
